(MENAFN) Chinese customs officials intercepted a man last week attempting to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into the country by concealing them in his trousers, according to reports from local media on Tuesday. The incident unfolded at Futian Port in Shenzhen, a crucial checkpoint linking Hong Kong to mainland China, where the suspect sought entry through a non-declaration channel.
The man, whose identity remains undisclosed by authorities, aroused suspicion among customs officers who detained him for inspection. Upon searching him, officials discovered six plastic bags hidden in his trouser pockets, containing a diverse assortment of live snakes. A detailed inventory counted a staggering total of 104 reptiles secreted within his clothing.
Among the confiscated snakes, officials identified five distinct species: milk snakes, western hognose snakes, corn snakes, Texas rat snakes, and bullsnakes. Notably, four of these species are classified as non-native to China and are prohibited from entry without proper certification under Chinese regulations.
While specific details regarding the smuggler's arrest were not disclosed, Chinese customs emphasized their commitment to enforcing biosafety and disease control laws. They cautioned that individuals found violating these regulations could face legal consequences, underscoring the severity of such wildlife trafficking activities.
This incident sheds light on ongoing challenges related to animal smuggling in China, despite stringent prohibitions against such practices. Just recently, news agency reported another case where an individual was apprehended while attempting to transport 454 turtles, including endangered species, from Macau to mainland China. These incidents highlight the persistent illicit trade in wildlife and the efforts required to combat it effectively under existing legal frameworks.
