Strategies To Ensure Gomal University's Viability Amid Financial Challenges
The aim was to build a modern and highly educated nation. Located in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the university has earned a prominent place in Pakistan due to its exceptional educational services.
The establishment of Gomal University owes much to Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan, who donated 11,000 kanals of agricultural land for the university. He was the first and founding Vice-Chancellor, whose efforts significantly contributed to the institution's success.
Gomal University has played a vital role in Pakistan's educational development through its academic and research achievements. It stands as a testament to the vision and efforts of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan.
Today, Gomal University is one of Pakistan's largest and most renowned universities, with nine faculties and 58 departments. Currently, the university hosts over 24,000 students, reflecting its status as one of the country's largest institutions in both quality and size.
The university comprises various departments, including the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, and Faculty of Management Sciences.
Despite its achievements, Gomal University faces a severe financial crisis, primarily due to pension liabilities, as highlighted by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shakeebullah. He mentioned that the number of students, around 24,000, is the highest among universities, and they do not face issues with salaries. However, the university's expenses, including a 20 million rupees electricity bill and transport costs, coupled with pension liabilities, pose significant challenges.
Recent controversies have emerged regarding recruitment practices at Gomal University, Agricultural University Dera, and Lucky University. Dr. Shakeebullah, who is currently the acting Vice-Chancellor of three universities, refuted allegations of corruptions and emphasized that the hiring processes are fair and merit-based. He asserted that acting Vice-Chancellors are typically limited to handling day-to-day matters and do not have the authority for new recruitments, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the recent postings.
Dr. Shakeebullah also addressed the ongoing vacancy for the PRO position at the Agricultural University, stating that regular advertisements and necessary tests for such posts will commence soon.
Serving a population of 2.4 million in Dera Ismail Khan, along with students from South Waziristan, Bhakkar, Darya Khan (Punjab), and abroad, Gomal University's financial struggles hinder its potential.
To address these challenges, Gomal University can draw inspiration from IIT Delhi and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in India. These institutions overcame financial difficulties by strengthening industry partnerships, advancing research and development projects, attracting international students, and securing funding through various channels, including government grants and alumni support.
Gomal University can utilize its 11,000 kanals of agricultural land for cultivation and generate income. Additionally, renting out facilities like swimming pools, sports fields, and auditoriums for private events can provide substantial revenue. Implementing solar systems to reduce electricity costs and developing commercial projects such as hotels and restaurants on campus can further alleviate financial burdens.
By adopting these measures, Gomal University can overcome its financial crisis, enhance its educational services, and establish itself as a self-sustaining institution, continuing to play a crucial role in Pakistan's educational landscape.
