(MENAFN) Hyundai Motor has entered the competitive arena of affordable electric vehicles, unveiling its latest offering, the "Enster," at the Busan International Fair. This compact electric SUV, known domestically in South Korea as "Casper," is slated for release in the South Korean market this summer before expanding to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific regions. Hyundai's strategic move aims to counter the growing influence of Chinese electric car manufacturers by offering a model priced below 25,000 euros (USD26,775).
The Enster/Casper measures 3.8 meters in length and features advanced electronic driver assistance systems. Equipped with a 42 kilowatt-hour battery, it boasts a driving range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge, with an option for a larger battery that extends the range to 355 kilometers. Hyundai plans to disclose the final pricing details later this year.
This initiative reflects a broader trend among global automakers, including Tesla and Ford Motor, to develop more affordable electric vehicles amidst consumer demand and economic constraints exacerbated by rising interest rates. Concurrently, Chinese automakers like BYD are aggressively expanding their market share abroad with competitively priced, technologically advanced electric vehicles. BYD's forthcoming model, the Seagull, priced at less than USD10,000 in China, is set for export to Europe, where its final retail price, even after accounting for customs duties, is anticipated to be under 20,000 euros.
Hyundai's introduction of the Enster/Casper underscores its commitment to meeting evolving consumer preferences for economical electric vehicles without compromising on quality or technological innovation.
