UAE allocates USD8M to WHO for humanitarian aid in Sudan


(MENAFN) In a significant move aimed at addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged USD8 million to the World health Organization (WHO). The agreement, formalized at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, underscores the UAE's commitment to alleviating the challenging conditions faced by the Sudanese population.

His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations, represented the UAE in signing the agreement. On behalf of the WHO, the agreement was signed by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General, in the presence of Her Excellency Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs.

This financial contribution is part of the UAE's broader humanitarian efforts worldwide and specifically supports WHO's initiatives to enhance healthcare services in Sudan, particularly in conflict-affected areas. The funding aims to bolster healthcare infrastructure, strengthen emergency response capabilities, and implement disease prevention programs crucial for the well-being of the Sudanese people.

Her Excellency Lana Zaki Nusseibeh highlighted the lifesaving impact of WHO's work in Sudan and emphasized the UAE's longstanding partnership with the organization, which has provided crucial support during humanitarian crises globally. She reaffirmed the UAE's solidarity with the Sudanese people, underscoring the importance of ongoing humanitarian aid.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude for the UAE's generous pledge, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in meeting Sudan's urgent health needs and supporting refugees in neighboring countries. He emphasized the collective effort needed to safeguard the lives and well-being of vulnerable populations in Sudan.
