French Premier issues caution that election outcome possibly to weaken support for Ukraine

(MENAFN) French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has issued a stark warning regarding the implications of the right-wing National Rally party's potential victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Attal expressed concerns that a shift in power to the National Rally could lead to significant changes in France's stance on both domestic policies and international relations, particularly impacting its support for Ukraine.

Following President Emmanuel Macron's decision to dissolve the French government and call for snap elections after his party's setback in the European Parliament elections, France is preparing for parliamentary elections on June 30, with a runoff scheduled for July 7.

Speaking on BFM TV, Attal highlighted his apprehension that a victory for right-wing parties, including the National Rally, could pave the way for policies resembling a potential "Frexit" and a reduction in support for Ukraine. The prime minister emphasized that such developments could heighten the risk of European alignment with Russia.

These concerns echo sentiments expressed by other European Union member states, as reported by Bloomberg. Several European Union nations fear that Macron's electoral defeat could diminish France's role as a key supporter of Ukraine, impacting crucial plans such as sending military instructors to assist Ukrainian forces.

Political scientist Gilles Ivaldi from Sciences Po university underscored the potential divergence in policy between Macron's administration, which continues until 2027, and a National Rally-led government. Ivaldi noted that such a shift could lead to significant policy differences on critical issues such as relations with Russia, Ukraine, European defense initiatives, and climate policies, potentially weakening Europe's collective stance.

The warning from Prime Minister Attal underscores the pivotal stakes of the upcoming French elections, not only for domestic governance but also for France's role in shaping European and international affairs, particularly in relation to Ukraine and broader geopolitical dynamics.
