Sheikh Hamad Translation Award's Foreign Tour Concludes With Visit To Nigeria

Doha, Qatar: The 10th Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding has concluded its foreign tours which come within the framework of enhancing communication with cultures related to the selected languages in each edition.

The latest tours held by the award's media team in Nigeria came to introduce about the reality of translation between the Arabic language and the Yoruba language, on the occasion of the selection of“Yoruba” among the languages chosen in the achievement category of the 10th edition of the award.

The tour included a number of meetings and cultural events, where the delegation met with representatives of academic institutions and translation institutes in Nigeria, coordinated by the Nigerian Centre for Arab Research.

The delegation learned about the experience of the Nigerian Translation Institute, which employs more than 400 translators between international languages and Nigerian languages, and work is currently underway to develop a dual dictionary between the two languages.

The award delegation also met with representatives of the Centre for International Studies at the prestigious University of Ilorin and a number of Arabic language graduates from the university's translation institute, in addition to the language departments. They have about ten translated works, hoping to cooperate with the award to establish a department for simultaneous translation.

The media delegation held a meeting with those in charge of Nigeria International Radio. The meeting participants revealed that the number of Arabic speakers in Nigeria is large, and that Muslims constitute 68% of the population.

During the media delegation's meeting with representatives of the Lagos State Research and Training Complex, this scientific institution, which contributes to training teachers in the field of the Arabic language, was introduced.

The award's media delegation also visited the city of Ibaden, which is the stronghold of the Yoruba language, and met with those in charge of the University of Ibadan, which includes the oldest Arabic language teaching department in Nigeria.

During the delegation's visit to the Nigerian Arab Institute, Dr. Ahmed Olayiola Abdul Salam, Director of the Institute, explained that the Institute combines authenticity, modernity, and the religious and linguistic sciences of the Institute.

On the third day of the tour, the award's media delegation visited the House of Call and Guidance, and on the fourth day of the tour, the award's media delegation visited“Voice of Nigeria” radio and the official (NT 2) channel in Lagos.

Official Spokesperson and Media Advisor for the Award Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad reviewed the objectives of the award, which was established in 2015, its categories, and its judging criteria.

She explained during the tour that the award's interest in the Yoruba language and its counterparts came with the aim of giving every culture its opportunity to build bridges of acculturation. Dr. Al Fayyad said that the award aims to spread peace and international understanding and pay attention to the quality of works translated between the two languages. She noted that the award administration had previously included the Hausa language, which is widespread in Nigeria, in the sub-language category, and that Muhammad Thani won the award for his work“Sahih Al Bukhari.”

Dr. Imtenan Al Sammadi explained during the tour on the role of translation in achieving acculturation between languages, calling for increased interest in translating religious and literary works from Yoruba into Arabic to introduce Nigerian culture.
