'Qatar Aims To Lead In Global AI Race'

Doha, Qatar: Qatar has made significant strides in the technology realm by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and building a knowledge-based Economy for the people of the country, said an official.

This comes, during the 'Lead the Era of AI' event hosted yesterday by Microsoft Qatar in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Technology (MCIT) and under the patronage of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, H E Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai.

During the keynote speech, the Assistant Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Operations Affairs at MCIT, Sami Al Shammari said:“As we aim to be leaders in the global AI race, not mere participants, we seek partnerships with industry giants, including Microsoft, which is the cornerstone of our journey.”

He mentioned“Together, we have implemented robust cloud solutions, boosted our cybersecurity, and used the power of AI to optimise public services.”

The official outlined the National AI Strategy, based on six key areas such as education, data access, employment, business, research, and ethics.“This strategy is not just a plan, but a pledge to a future where AI influences every aspect of life, business, and governance,” he explained.

In a statement to the media, Al Shammari said“With the latest advancements in AI at their fingertips, public and private sector enterprises in Qatar are well positioned to drive progress towards the ambitious Digital Agenda 2030 aiming to make Qatar a smart and technologically advanced country.”

Lana Khalaf, General Manager, Microsoft Qatar, in her speech said“Today we would explore the transformative power of AI and generative AI on the economy, people transforming industries, as well as transforming customer experiences. It is estimated that AI will contribute 8.2 percent to the GDP.” She noted that with the rise of AI, surging demand of customers locally and regionally has been growing ever since.

“By further building out the data center region, we are unlocking unprecedented possibilities for AI-driven innovation across Qatar. Organisations will be able to harness the power of Microsoft's trusted cloud to unlock the full potential of AI to enhance decision-making, transform industries, and drive sustainable economic growth,” Khalaf stated.

The event also witnessed numerous firms including the TASMU Programme of MCIT, Qatar Airways, Ashghal, Kahramaa, Hayya, and Invest Qatar, bagging the 'AI Innovation Awards' for showcasing outstanding digital transformative by using AI technology in Qatar.

Microsoft hosted the event as the data center celebrates its second anniversary with the increase in demand for businesses across all sectors in Qatar in order to create a positive impact on the AI era.
