Maruti Suzuki To Invest Rs 450 Crore In Renewable Energy Projects Over 3 Years
The investment aims to boost the company's environmental sustainability efforts and make its operations greener.
In the current fiscal year 2023-24, Maruti Suzuki invested Rs 120.8 crore in renewable energy projects.
As part of its plan, the automaker has commenced production at a biogas plant at its Manesar facility, harnessing food waste and Napier grass. This aligns with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's 'Waste to Energy' program.
The pilot biogas plant in Manesar is designed to produce 0.2 tons of biogas daily, offsetting approximately 190 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
The biogas will provide energy for manufacturing processes, while the residual organic manure will be used for horticulture, creating a zero-discharge model.
"We are accelerating our efforts to increase the share of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations," said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India.
In addition to biogas, Maruti Suzuki is ramping up its solar capacity. It expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MWp in 2023-24 and plans to add 35 MWp over the next two years, reaching a total of 78.2 MWp by 2025-26.
These renewable energy initiatives align with Suzuki's Environmental Vision 2050 and the Government of India's renewable energy focus as Maruti Suzuki aims to double its production capacity to 4 million units by 2031.
