Europol dismantles Ragnar Locker ransomware group

(MENAFN) Europol has declared the disassembly of Ragnar Locker, a worldwide criminal organization regarded as "one of the most dangerous ransomware operations" in the past few years.

In an announcement issued on Friday, Europol revealed that the group was dismantled as part of a significant operation involving law enforcement and judicial authorities from eleven countries.

“This international sweep follows a complex investigation led by the French National Gendarmerie, together with law enforcement authorities from the Czechia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States of America,” Europol stated in a declaration, continuing that the initial series of captures under the case were conducted in Ukraine in late 2021.

The concluding phase of this extensive operation spanned from October 16 to October 20, during which multiple searches were conducted in Latvia, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

The alleged leader of the group was apprehended in France on October 16, and simultaneous searches were carried out at his residence in the Czech Republic. Shortly after these developments, five additional suspects were taken in for questioning in Spain and Latvia, according to information disclosed by Europol.

Authorities executed the seizure of servers and related infrastructure utilized by the group in the countries of the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. This action resulted in the shutdown of Ragnar Locker's leak site, which had been operating on the dark web.
