Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Communications and Information technology (MCIT) have inaugurated a futuristic and innovative 'Smart Qatar' TASMU Pavilion at the ongoing 2023 International Horticultural Exposition (Expo 2023) at Al Bidda Park.

The 3D-printed 12 high tower was inaugurated by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, H E Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, in the presence of the Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie and President of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Dr. Eng Saad bin Ahmed Al Muhannadi.

The pavilion reflects a unique blend of innovation and tradition, where cutting-edge technology harmonises with the authentic Qatari culture. Measuring 13x13 metres, the tower's design features ten levels with seven bricks in each row and was constructed from 75 individually 3D printed pieces. The structure also bagged the Guinness World Record for the 'Tallest Freestanding 3D-Printed Concrete Structure.'

In a statement, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, H E Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, said,“This Guinness World Record is not just a symbol of innovation and achievement, but a testament to Qatar's commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and collaboration and utilising them within our daily life. The TASMU Pavilion embodies Qatar's technological advancement, where tradition and technology harmoniously coexist to address global challenges. It is a beacon of inspiration for us all.”

The pavilion features rotating experiences to keep visitors engaged throughout the Expo's six months. It has created a unique display of the flora and fauna in Qatar using artificial intelligence (AI). According to MCIT officials, monthly updates will introduce new content and stories.

Speaking to The Peninsula after the launch, the Director of the Digital Innovation Department at MCIT, Eman Al Kuwari, said,“We (MCIT) wanted to participate with something exceptional. We wanted to show the innovative application of technology with the pavilion we have built -- that is a Guinness World Record as the highest 3D printed structure. So using this emerging technology and this application inspired us to participate in the Expo.”

To add a special edition for the younger generation, the MCIT is also represented in Expo 2023 Doha through Studio 5, which is designed to nurture digital learners among children and youth, fostering problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation skills. MCIT will also provide daily workshops, panels, and hackathons at the Innovation Center within the International Zone free of charge to the community throughout the Expo.

“Now technology is becoming part of our daily life -- we interact with it in every way, and we don't even realise that we're interacting with technology. However, in the Smart Country programme, we like to create meaningful things, increase people's quality of life, diversify the economy and create opportunities. This participation here is to be an inspiration, to see how technology can be applied,” Al Kuwari added.

Meanwhile, MCIT disclosed that in collaboration with Fira Barcelona, the Smart City Expo World Congress organisers, the third edition of Smart City Expo Doha has been scheduled for November 29-30.

This event, themed“A World of Data: Connecting People, Elevating Lives,” aims to build upon the successes of previous editions. Smart City Expo Doha would foster international discussions on urban development, focusing on solutions for today's challenges.

Topics include Green Urban Environments, Digital Governance, and Cognitive Cities and Liveable Places, all offering a platform to share projects, policies, and initiatives while exploiting opportunities and addressing challenges cities face in the digital era.
