90% Of Vehicles Driven In Sri Lanka Have Substandard Emissions


(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) Aug 25 (AdaDerana) – It was disclosed at the Sectoral Oversight Committee on energy & transport that the emissions of 90% of the vehicles driven in this country are substandard.

The said Committee met under the Chairmanship of Hon. Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda, Member of Parliament on the 22nd of August in Parliament, and the youth representatives selected for the Sectoral Oversight Committees were also present at this Committee meeting held.

The Ministry of Transport presented the proposal to the Committee to prepare a minimum standard for bringing passenger transport buses to Sri Lanka which was discussed at length. The Committee meeting was held to prepare a minimum standard for the import of passenger buses to Sri Lanka, and 18 institutions were called for the said purpose. Following a discussion at length on the matter, the Committee decided that the buses should be imported in accordance with the criteria decided by the Committee for the future import of passenger buses to Sri Lanka.

It was revealed in the Committee that 90% of the vehicles running in Sri Lanka do not meet the emission standards and 20% of the vehicles that are submitted for emissions testing annually fail. It was also disclosed that 90% of the vehicles driven in Sri Lanka release harmful gases into the environment.

The organization present at the Committee presented the relevant matters and the Committee Hon. Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda, ordered the relevant departments to submit a report to the Committee within two months containing the facts regarding the monitoring, testing and regulation of passenger transport buses and the emission monitoring of vehicles.
