Leaders Of Junta In Niger, Ecowas Discuss Mediation Efforts - Agency


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, Aug 19 (KUNA) -- Military leaders in Niger held talks with a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by former Nigerian President Abdoussalami Abubakar, to explore a peaceful solution for the crisis in Niger.
A delegation from ECOWAS consisting of main religious leaders in Nigeria has arrived in Niamey and met with president of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, official news agency reported.
It said the delegation wanted to carrying out mediation efforts to explore means that would ease of lift sanctions against Niger.
The ECOWAS delegation visited the residency of deposed President Mohammad Bazoum and make sure he and his family were in good health.
Following the meeting with the ECOWAS delegation, Tiani lambasted ECOWAS siege on Niger which has devastating impacts on the people.
Tiani, in a speech broadcasted by official TV, said people and government of Niger were ready to defend themselves, considering any intervention by ECOWAS an occupation.
He said the council running the country "is pursuing the transitional phase which will take three years. (end)
