Turkey attempts to resurrect Black Sea grain agreement


(MENAFN) Turkey is attempting to resurrect the Black Sea grain agreement in its initial state and would not approve other plans for agricultural exports, according to Sabah daily, citing internal government sources.

Ankara is allegedly in diplomatic negotiations with representatives from the United Nations, Russia, and Ukraine in an attempt to reopen the humanitarian corridor that permitted Ukrainian grain shipments until the arrangement expired last month.

Turkey also backs the Joint Coordination Center's (JCC) efforts on the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The JCC was established in Istanbul in July of last year with delegates from Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, as well as the United Nations until Moscow chose not to renew the agreement beyond July 17.

Russia said that the United States and the European Union were unable to maintain their end of the bargain by allowing Russian food and fertilizer shipments.

In accordance with media reports, Ankara is aiming to restart the grain agreement in its prior shape in order to assist fulfill the agreement's principal goal of reducing tensions in the Black Sea region.
