The Gujarat government is considering the possibility of providing relief to the state's industry in terms of water charges levied, reported TOI.

The state government is planning to bring down the annual 10 per cent increment in water charges to 3 per cent soon.

"While most of the bigger players have been paying their water charges regularly, many smaller units are defaulting. As of now, pending water charges dues are to the tune of Rs 3,700 crore," reported TOI stating a top source said.

At present, Water charges vary in Gujarat, with units in Saurashtra-Kutch and North Gujarat paying much more than those in South and Central Gujarat.

"As of April 1, 2023, the average water charge for industry in Gujarat was Rs 41.79 per 1,000 litres. In 2022-23, industry paid up Rs 1,474 crore. As of March 31, 2023, water charges due stand at 3,786.66 crore," a source said.

As per reports, the Gujarat government is set to loose Rs 106 crore in revenue annually if the annual 10 per cent increase is cut to 3 per cent.

"After having received a large number of representations on this issue, the government will take a decision after discussions between various departments," sources added.
