(MENAFN) As Ukraine looks toward the West, the geopolitical center of gravity in Europe is shifting eastward as Ukraine leans toward the West, and US Leader Joe Biden's visit to Poland in February sent a strong message that Warsaw is now at least as important to Washington as Berlin as well as Paris.
According to Pawel Markiewicz, executive director of the Polish Institute of International Affairs Office in Washington, "the balance of diplomatic power is certainly tipping toward east-central Europe."
“Warsaw’s reaction to the war in Ukraine, both in the humanitarian and military-political contexts, indicates that Poland is stepping up its regional and European roles, it’s serious about defending its European partners.”
The geopolitical environment in Eastern Europe is being constantly adjusted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and developments in Russia, which may have repercussions in Belarus. Potentially at risk are both NATO and the future makeup and structure of the EU.
Due to their participation in the Normandy Format negotiations with Russia, that many believe resulted in the Minsk Agreements and prepared the ground for the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, both Germany and France have lost some of their clout in Washington. Berlin's reputation was also damaged by its reluctance to see the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as a tactical error.
