According to the club's statement, Fenerbahce SK player Samet Akaydin allegedly spat on Trezeguet while the latter was performing a prostration, known as sujood, in celebration of successfully converting a penalty kick against Fenerbahce.

In defense of their player, Fenerbahce released a statement on their official social media platforms, asserting that Akaydin had confirmed the incident to be a result of "manipulation" caused by changing camera angles. The club stood by their player's denial of the alleged spitting incident.
