Arab Health Ministers Call For End To Israeli Curbs Against Palestinian Medical Sector

Geneva: The Council of Arab Ministers for health called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to intervene immediately to stop the inhumane practices contrary to international conventions committed by the occupation against medical personnel and ambulances in the occupied Palestinian territories, which prevent health teams from carrying out their duties, in addition to impeding the supply of fuel and electricity to hospitals and health centres in Palestine.

This came during the meeting of the 59th regular session of the Council of Arab Ministers for Health, which was held in Geneva on Sunday and was chaired by Algeria.

Minister of Public Health H E Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari headed Qatar's delegation at the meeting.

The meeting dealt with several issues, particularly the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan. It also discussed the strategy for improving the health of mothers, children, and adolescent girls in the Arab region. The council instructed the Technical Secretariat to present successful Arab experiences in this field to build and develop the capabilities of human resources in response to the health needs of mothers, children, and adolescent girls and exchange various experiences among the member states.

In a statement, the General Secretariat of the Arab League said that the Council of Arab Ministers for Health approved, during the meeting, the activation of the pink portfolio initiative for the health of Arab women and also approved the new formation of its executive office, in addition to adopting the unified speech of the Council before the 76th WHO World Health Assembly.

The 59th session of the Council of Arab Ministers for Health witnessed the launch of the Arab strategy for a health-friendly budget in the presence of Arab health ministers, the United Nations Population Fund for Arab States, and the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

During the meeting, the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector of the Arab League, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, explained that this strategy is a reference for Arab countries to develop health budgets that are more responsive and flexible to the needs of their population.
