US Air Force Chief: F-16s' Impact in Ukraine-Russia Conflict Limited, Focus on Collaborative Training
(MENAFN) United States Air Force Chief, Frank Kendall, recently addressed the issue of deploying F-16 fighter jets to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russian forces, shedding light on the potential impact of such a move. Kendall's comments poured cold water on the notion that the introduction of F-16s would be a decisive factor in Ukraine's favor, as he emphasized that airpower alone would not play a significant role in determining the outcome of the conflict.
Speaking at an event in Washington, Kendall acknowledged that the provision of F-16s to Ukraine would certainly enhance their military capabilities. However, he cautioned against considering it a "dramatic game-changer" for the overall strength of the Ukrainian armed forces. These remarks came as a departure from earlier statements by the United States administration, which had initially been reluctant to supply F-16s to Ukraine.
Despite this change in stance, President Joe Biden's administration has not finalized the decision on whether the F-16s will be sent directly from the United States or if European allies will be involved in their procurement. United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, in an interview with CNN, indicated that a joint effort between the United States and its European partners was also a possibility. This collaborative approach suggests that Washington is committed to ensuring Ukraine's access to the F-16s, regardless of the specific logistics involved.
Moreover, Kendall announced that the United States would extend its support to Ukraine through a joint international training program, aimed at preparing Ukrainian pilots to effectively operate the F-16 jets. This initiative demonstrates the US commitment to assisting Ukraine beyond the mere provision of equipment, underscoring the importance of properly trained personnel in maximizing the benefits of the F-16s.
