TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Some farmer in the Khawaja Ghar district of northern Takhar province have expressed their concerns against locust attack on their crops and asked the government for support.
Baig Mohammad, one of the farmers from the Khawaja Ghar district said from the past one month grasshopper attacked their crops but the government paid no attention to their problem.
“Besides attack on wheat crops, grasshoppers did not spare orchards as well in this district. Farmers provided no facilities or medicines to deal with the locust attack,” he said.
Qari Abdul Baqi, another farmer, said farmers strived to counter the locust attck on their lands from the past one months but its seemed that these efforts would yield no result.
“With each passing day the past one year efforts of farmers would go in vain if proper attention to the problem was not paid.”
District Chief Mohammad Ismael Farooqi said that the Agriculture Department held responsibility to address the problems of farmers.
He said not action had been taken so far to counter the grasshoppers attack by the relevant authority.
Agriculture Director Malwavi Rahimullah Ahadi said steps had been taken to address the mass locust attack on public crops, adding that a campaign in this regard had been launched.
This comes that earlier, the FAO has warned against the locust attack in nine Afghanistan provinces and said if the attack was not controlled there is the possibility that such attacks may grow in the future.
