Developing Countries Concerned Over G7 Focus On Ukraine - EU Pres.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, May 15 (KUNA) -- The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said on Monday that the developing countries are complaining that the G7 group of advanced economies is not paying attention to their needs but focusing on Ukraine only.
"Developing and emerging countries have expressed concerns that the G7 is focusing too much on Ukraine and not paying enough attention to their needs and priorities. We have heard their concerns. We want to build strong partnerships with developing and emerging countries in ways that are mutually beneficial," said Michel during a press conference in Brussels.
He also added that they are convinced they can make a difference in areas of the Ukraine war, international cooperation, and economic resilience and security during the G7 meeting which will take place in Hiroshima, Japan, from 19-21 May.
On her part, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said at the joint press conference that they will reaffirm their support for Ukrainian President Zelensky's Peace Formula at the G7 meeting.
"Any credible peace plan must be anchored in the principles of the UN Charter. And we are extremely clear: only Ukraine has to decide when to consider potential negotiations, "she said.
Von der Leyen noted that the EU and its member states have also provided over 70 billion euros (USD 76 billion) in overall assistance to Ukraine.
She also added that together with Charles Michel they will attend the Summit of the Council of Europe in Iceland 16-17 May, then will go to the G7 Summit in Hiroshima and finally attend the EU-South Korea summit in Seoul on 22 May. (end)
