South Tehran Wastewater Treatment Plant Launches Biogas Power Plant to Reduce Emissions

(MENAFN) The South Tehran Wastewater Treatment Plant has launched a biogas power plant for units 5 and 6, which was inaugurated by Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian. The power plant has two combined heat and power (CHP) generators with a total nominal capacity of 2.4 megawatt hours and can generate up to 15 million kilowatt hours of electricity. The implementation of this project will result in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 75,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The biogas power plant collects biogas from wastewater treatment and prevents its release into the environment. By generating electricity and heat from the biogas and avoiding the consumption of fossil fuels, the production and release of methane gas is also prevented. This innovative solution provides an environmentally-friendly and sustainable method of energy production.

A biogas plant is a facility that creates oxygen-free conditions for anaerobic digestion to occur. It is an artificial system that converts waste into sustainable energy and fertilizers, with positive effects on the environment. The use of biogas plants not only generates renewable energy but also helps manage waste and prevent greenhouse gas emissions.

Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is the concurrent generation of electricity or mechanical power and useful thermal energy, such as heating and/or cooling, from a single source of energy. CHP systems are highly efficient and have the potential to significantly reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The use of CHP in the South Tehran Wastewater Treatment Plant's biogas power plant is another example of Iran's commitment to sustainable and efficient energy production.
