EP Cmte Rejects Proposed EU-US Personal Data Transfer
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, April 13 (KUNA) -- The European Parliamentآ's Civil Liberties Committee Thursday called on the European Commission not to allow for transfers of personal data between the EU and the US.
The proposed EU-US Data Privacy Framework is an improvement, but not enough to justify an adequacy decision on personal data transfers, it said in a resolution adopted by 37 votes in favour, 0 against, and 21 abstaining.
The resolution noted that the framework still allows for bulk collection of personal data in certain cases, does not make bulk data collection subject to independent prior authorisation, and does not provide for clear rules on data retention.
MEPs argue that the framework for data transfers needs to be future-proof, and the assessment of adequacy needs to be based on the practical implementation of rules.
Rapporteur of the resolution Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar said: "we are not convinced that this new framework sufficiently protects personal data of our citizens."
The European Commission, the EUآ's executive body, is in the process of adopting an adequacy decision for data transfers based on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
The issue will now be tabled for discussion in a future full session of the European Parliament. (end)
