EU Reiterates One-China Policy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, April 11 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Tuesday reiterated its position on the one-China policy and called for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
"The EU has a very clear position on China. There is a well-established one-China policy, and we continue to call for peace and stability in the Straits of Taiwan and we are firmly opposed to any desire to unilateral change in status quo in particular the use of force," Eric Mamer, chief European Commission spokesperson, told a news conference in Brussels.
He was commenting on the results of the joint visit by French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to Beijing last week.
"The objective of the visit was to have a joint meeting with President Xi Jinping. The messaging that came out of that trilateral meeting was very consistent and they passed a message of significant policy dimensions of EU relations with China. I think that came through very well," said the EU spokesperson.
However, he declined to comment on a press interview given by Macron in which he said Europe should not be a "follower" of the US on the issue of Taiwan.
The French president suggested in an interview with the POLITICO publication last week that Europe should not get dragged into a U.S.-China confrontation about Taiwan.
Macron said "the great risk" Europe faces is that it "gets caught up in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building its strategic autonomy."
EU spokesperson Mamer said "we donآ't comment on positions taken by European leaders. I am not going to react on the interview".
"What is clear that we have very close relations with the US notably in the context of the war in Ukraine to ensure that Chinaآ's plays a constructive role," added the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, EU High Representative Josep Borrell is to travel to China on Thursday on a three-day day visit to discuss bilateral ties and global issues, his spokesperson Nabila Massrali, told reporters in Brussels today. (end)
