(MENAFN) Philip Todd, a Senate staffer, was randomly attacked and stabbed in Washington, D.C. over the weekend. His parents released a statement on Wednesday stating that he is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The attack by a person armed with a knife was brutal, and according to the Police report, the attacker attempted to kill Todd. The intervention of Todd's friend prevented the wounds from being fatal.
The police affidavit revealed that Todd did not know the suspect, later identified as Glynn Neal, and did not know why he was stabbed. The suspect reportedly jumped on top of Todd during the attack and stabbed him in the head and upper body before Todd's friend pushed the suspect off, allowing Todd and his friend to escape.
Todd sustained several injuries, including a puncture wound to the left side of his head, which penetrated his skull and likely caused an internal brain bleed. He also suffered a puncture wound to the lower left torso that punctured his lung, a minor puncture wound to the left chest, and a laceration on his left ear that may require reconstruction.
Detectives were able to connect Neal to a cellphone found at the scene and arrested him. Officers found a bloody knife near the crime scene. Neal has been charged with assault with an attempt to kill while armed, according to court documents. He told officers that he was hearing voices at the time of the attack, according to the police affidavit. Court records indicate that Neal had just been released from prison after serving a 12-year sentence on other charges.
Todd's family expressed gratitude towards the D.C. police for their professionalism, as well as the love and support from Todd's friends, colleagues, and community, including Antioch Church. They also thanked the Senate chaplain and Sen. Rand Paul, Todd's boss, for their personal visit to encourage Philip.
Paul issued a statement on Monday condemning the attack, saying that a member of his staff had been "brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C." The attack has received widespread attention, with many expressing concern over the prevalence of violence in the city. Despite the severity of his injuries, Todd's expected full recovery is a hopeful outcome of this tragic event.
