GW University Picks New Sports Team Nicknames After Controversy

(MENAFN) Amidst the ongoing conversations surrounding racial justice and equity, George Washington University has decided to change the name of its sports teams. The university's previous nickname, "Colonials," had been deemed offensive by some students due to its perceived association with violence towards Native Americans and other colonized peoples.

In an effort to involve the campus community in the decision-making process, the university launched a "Moniker Madness" campaign, which solicited feedback from students, faculty, and staff. The campaign received nearly 20,000 points of feedback, according to a press release. The university initially presented 10 options for a new team name, and after the "First Impressions" phase of decision-making, the list has been narrowed down to four potential names: "Ambassadors," "Blue Fog," "Revolutionaries," and "Sentinels."

Ellen Moran, the vice president for communications and marketing at George Washington University, expressed her gratitude for the participation of the GW community in the development of the new moniker. She hopes that the community will continue to engage in the process and provide feedback as the university moves forward in selecting a new team name that is both respectful and inclusive. This decision is just one example of the ongoing efforts being made by institutions to create a more equitable and just society for all.
