Pakistani and Afghan interim government officials agreed to initiate bus services between Peshawar and Jalalabad to facilitate passenger movement along the border, The Express Tribune reported.

As per the agreement between the two sides, Pakistan will build a junction for the buses at the border point of Torkham, and the Afghan side will have to establish one in Jalalabad. This is aimed at facilitating passenger movement between the two countries.

“The decision to establish road service facilities between the countries is taken due to the existing challenges in air travel between Kabul and Islamabad,” Pakistan media, The Express Tribune quoted.

It is reported that air travel between Pakistan and Afghanistan has become complicated since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021.

According to The Express Tribune, Pakistan will establish a special place to investigate migrants, equipped with modern technologies at the Torkham border point.

Furthermore, it is highlighted in the report that the Taliban are obliged to provide security for passengers, their equipment, and buses on Afghan soil.

This is going to be the first transportation initiative of its kind between Pakistan and Afghanistan, aimed at facilitating passenger crossing at the Torkham border.

People in both countries are optimistic about the successful implementation of this project which will resolve the many issues they are currently faced with while crossing through Torkham.

Both sides agreed to make the border-crossing points more efficient to ensure early clearance of trade and transit traffic and address the bottlenecks and impediments on a priority basis.

It was also agreed that the difficulties in visa processing would be addressed through mutual coordination. The two sides reaffirmed maintaining regular coordination for implementing these understandings and further expanding economic cooperation.
