(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant on Friday against Russian President Vladimir Putin due to war crimes in Ukraine, a move Moscow said was meaningless.
The ICC issued the warrant on suspicion of the unlawful deportation of children and illegal transfer of people from the territory of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, while Moscow denied all accusations.
The court also issued a warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's Commissioner for Children's Rights, on the exact charges.
Russian Foreign Minister Spokesperson Maria Zakharova reacted on her Telegram account:“The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, including from a legal point of view.”
“Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and bears no obligations under it.”
According to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, Russia finds the questions the ICC poses“outrageous and unacceptable,” and any decisions made by the court are“null and void” for Russia.
Both Russia and Ukraine are not ICC members. However, Kyiv has given a court in The Hague the authority to prosecute crimes committed on Ukrainian soil since Russia began its invasion last year.
Meanwhile, the 123-member ICC does not have a police force to carry out warrants, instead needing the member state to do the job.
It is still unclear how the warrant against Putin would be carried out because it could only be implemented if he were travelling in a country that is a member of the ICC, which he is unlikely to do.
