Prime Healthcare Residency Programs Awarded Funding By The Department Of Health Care Access And Information

(MENAFN- ForPressRelease) Prime Healthcare's six residency programs in California received $5.75 million in grants that will increase medical education opportunities. The grants will support residency programs at Prime's hospitals in Redding, Anaheim, Inglewood, Victorville and Chino, California. The residency programs are part of the larger Prime West Consortium sponsoring institution.

Prime West is an academic consortium consisting of the residencies within Prime Healthcare hospitals in California. The Prime West Consortium sponsors residency programs in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatric, Podiatric, and Dermatology.

The Song-Brown Healthcare Workforce Training Act was established in 1973 to increase funding to support the education and training of healthcare professionals, with a particular focus on primary care providers. The program has funded the training of thousands of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals across the state. In particular, the Song-Brown awards attempt on focusing increasing the primary care residency slots in medically underserved areas and attracting underrepresented minorities from those communities. Research suggests physicians from medically underserved areas are more likely to care for underserved patients.

Prime Healthcare, one of the nation's leading health systems with 45 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient locations in 14 states, is committed to developing residency programs to address the physician shortage in California. Prime West was awarded the largest percentage of the Song-Brown Program Grant for expanding primary care, which will be used to further develop these residency programs.

Following are the Prime awardees:
Chino Valley Medical Center Family Medicine– $625,000
West Anaheim Medical Center Internal Medicine- $125,000
Desert Valley Hospital Family Medicine – $1,000,000
Desert Valley Hospital Internal Medicine – $2,000,000
Shasta Regional Medical Center Internal Medicine – $1,000,000
