Iranian Defense Minister voices support for Syria's territorial integrity
(MENAFN) Iran's Defense Minister, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, has reaffirmed Iran's support for Syria's territorial integrity in a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Ali Mahmoud Abbas, in Tehran. Ashtiani condemned any attack on Syria's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in reference to Israel's frequent attacks on Syrian territory, calling for the regime to be prevented from becoming more aggressive. He also criticized the presence of American forces in Syria, labeling it as illegitimate and a source of insecurity and destruction. Ashtiani emphasized the necessity of the withdrawal of all occupying forces from Syria, particularly American forces in the northeastern regions.
Ashtiani also praised the close cooperation between Iran and Syria in their fight against terrorism, stating that the two countries' strategic depth was due to the mix of Iranian and Syrian fighters' blood in the fight against terrorist and takfiri groups. He further added that common enemies have been unable to damage the deep and heart-felt relationship between Tehran and Damascus. The two defense officials discussed issues of common interest, including regional developments and bilateral ties between Iran and Syria.
Iran has been a key ally of Syria in its ongoing civil war, providing military, financial, and political support to the Syrian government.
