Importance of Rafael Grossi's visit to Tehran for revitalizing JCPOA

(MENAFN) The recent visit of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi to Tehran is deemed to be the most significant visit of the IAEA Director General in the past few years as the results of the trip could determine the prospect of revitalizing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement. In the past, whenever Iran and the West sought a Political agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program, Iran's problems with the IAEA were less. However, this time, these problems are between Iran and the IAEA, and the solution to these issues can clarify the roadmap for revitalizing the JCPOA. Hence, it can be said that the IAEA's political role is more important than its responsibility in the technical field.

While it is important for the IAEA to be able to carry out its technical mission within the framework of the JCPOA, the differences between Iran and the IAEA have always been influenced by the political dialogue between Iran and the West. The more hopeful these talks were, the less Iran's differences with the IAEA, and vice versa.

In an interview with Etemad newspaper, political expert Ali Bigdeli emphasized that the IAEA's visit to Tehran is not a guarantee that Iran's differences with the agency will be resolved. He also noted that Iran has not yet answered all the IAEA's questions, and the most important question is how this visit is related to the future of the JCPOA. The outcome of the visit and its impact on the JCPOA will become clear in the future.

The JCPOA, signed in 2015, was an agreement between Iran and six world powers to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. However, former United States President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to gradually abandon its commitments under the agreement. The JCPOA's revival has been a top priority for the Iranian government since the new United States administration under President Joe Biden took office. The Biden administration has expressed a willingness to rejoin the deal, but the two sides have yet to agree on the details of a potential return to the agreement.
