Expo 2023 Doha To Showcase Agricultural Solutions

Doha: The International Horticultural Exhibition (Expo 2023 Doha) will introduce advanced techniques and solutions to boost the agriculture sector and to combat desertification for addressing climate change, said an official.

Techniques that enable the sustainable cultivation of trees and crops in arid lands play an important role in reversing desertification, evident around the world.

“The expo will host famous international companies, universities and research institutions from over 80 countries,” said Secretary-General of the National Committee for hosting Expo 2023 Doha, Mohammed Ali Al Khouri.

Speaking to Qatar TV on Tuesday, he said :“We need such techniques to increase cultivated lands for agricultural purpose and landscape for combating desertification in a bid to protect the environment for addressing climate change.”

Al Khouri, who is also Director of Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality, said that many international and local universities, including Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University and those running under Qatar Foundation will participate in Expo 2023 Doha.

He said that the universities will present research on enhancing agriculture sector, including farming and landscape, which will benefit Qatar and many other countries of the region.“A large number of events and activities will be held during the event. We are all set to issue the agenda of six-month-long Expo 2023 Doha,' the first-of-its-kind in the GCC and MENA region,” said Al Khori.

He said that many local institutions from government and private sectors will contribute greatly in organising the expo.

“A number of agreements have been signed with Qatar Museums. The international pavilion will be built by the participating countries contributing to the initiatives for promoting environmental protection and agriculture,” said Al Khori.

He said that Expo 2023 Doha, spreading over 1.7 million sqm, will be held at Al Bidda Park between two Doha Metro stations from October 2, 2023 to March 28, 2024, under the theme 'Green Desert Better Environment'.

“The 179 day-long expo is expected to attract over 3 million visitors. Expo 2023 Doha will be divided mainly in three parts - international pavilion, cultural pavilion and family area. An area of 150,000sqm is reserved for the international participants,” said Al Khori.

The expo will address the challenges that hot desert countries face in the field of desertification and sustainability, and will constitute a new opportunity for the development of agriculture and green cities in Qatar, GCC and the Middle East region. The theme of expo is 'Green Desert Better Environment' as the talk of the time is environment, climate change and plantation, especially in desert countries, which have limited resources of water and arable lands.
