Doha: The Doha film Institute (DFI) has opened registration for the lecture series“Watching the Classics” with Professor Richard Peña, the tenth session of which will take place on January 17, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

For this month, he will discuss the Polish film Ashes and Diamonds, directed by Andrzej Wajda.

The series is an online programme that allows filmmakers and film enthusiasts to learn more about the history of cinema. This series of talks and discussions, led by renowned scholar Richard Peña, Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival, examines a different indisputable masterpiece of global cinema.

Selected photographs and video snippets will be featured for discussion during the lecture, and participants can submit questions to Professor Peña in advance of the lecture, and he will respond to them at the conclusion of each session

Ashes and Diamonds tells the revelation of Stalin's crimes in 1953 at the Soviet Communist Party Congress led in the ensuing years to a period called“The Thaw” in the Soviet Union as well as in its communist“allies” in Central and Eastern Europe.

“Artists, including filmmakers, threw off the rigid guidelines that had dictated style and content, exploring a variety of themes and topics in ways that would previously have been unthinkable. Ashes and Diamonds is surely one of the finest examples of this new tendency,” said DFI.

The movie, which is set on the final day of World War 2, centres on Maciek, a soldier in the Polish Home Army who has been tasked with assassinating a communist leader in a tiny town.

The human and political tensions of a Poland attempting to decide how to move forward are masterfully captured by Andrzej Wajda.

This programme is open to applicants over the age of 18. The sessions are best suited for those with some knowledge of filmmaking and who wish to expand their understanding of film history.

Fee for the lecture series is QR70. There is a 20 percent discount for those with Qatar Museum's Culture Pass. To register, visit the website of DFI.
