UK Reports Record Number Of Migrant Arrivals In '22
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON, Jan 1 (KUNA) -- A record 45,728 migrants have reportedly crossed the English Channel to the United Kingdom from northern France on small boats in 2022, up more than 60 percent on the previous year.
The figures show an increase of more than 17,000 on the 28,526 who arrived in 2021, Sky News reported on Sunday, citing data of the UK immigration authorities.
'Migrants continue to risk their lives making the dangerous journey' - a continuation of a years-long trend that shows no signs of stopping, according to the report.
The British immigration authorities registered 299 migrant arrivals in 2018, 1,843 in 2019 and 8,466 in 2020.
The soaring numbers prompted the British and French authorities to ink an agreement worth USD 74.5 million in November 2022 to tackle the problem of illegal immigration across the English Channel. (end)
