Six people were killed in Russian gas explosion

(MENAFN) On Sunday, a gas explosion blasted through a five-story apartment building in the Russian city of Nizhnevartovsk in western Siberia, killing six people, according to rescue officials.

The incident, according to Emergency Minister Aleksandr Kurenkov, was caused by a gas tank leak. He went on to say that one of the occupants had complained to a neighbor about the smell of gas not long before the event.

The building lacked a central gas heating system, and occupants depended on gas tanks to cook their meals.

Regional emergency personnel said that 15 persons were injured, four of whom were hospitalized, and 52 residents were evacuated. They said that the low temperatures made clearing the rubble difficult. Two individuals are in critical condition, according to Aleksey Dobrovolsky, the region's chief health officer.

Regional Governor Natalya Komarova stated on Telegram that individuals who lost their houses or were evacuated are being sheltered temporarily at a school.
