Russia claims to be 'fortifying' its positions on Crimean Peninsula


(MENAFN) Russia has stated that it is reinforcing its fortifications on the Crimean Peninsula, just a week after withdrawing totally from the nearby Kherson province.

Sergei Aksyonov, the area's governor, stated on Friday that work is ongoing to bolster fortifications on Crimean territory in order to ensure the security of the whole region.

He went on to say that the military is working hard to make Crimeans "feel protected."

Ukrainian armed troops have been attempting to mount a counterattack on Crimea in recent months.

Residents in Ukraine's southern region are hurrying to stockpile essential supplies as a result of power and water outages caused by damage to key facilities.

Sergiy Khlan, the deputy head of the Kherson area, revealed on Friday that the Kherson city railway line is being rebuilt, with the first train leaving at the end of the day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he will do all possible to restore conditions in Kherson, and that surrounding areas will assist in the region's restoration. Zelensky has also stated that his soldiers intend to retake the peninsula.

Several explosions have occurred near Russian military sites in Crimea since February, including a coordinated drone strike on the vital Russian naval port of Sevastopol.

Since February of this year, Russia has been waging a "special military operation" in Ukraine to protect the pro-Russian populations of the two regions from persecution by Kiev.
