JALALABAD (Pajhwok): In cooperation with private sector, olive oil and its achar will be exported to foreign countries after years, an official said on Wednesday.

Despite natural disasters, olive orchards in Nangarhar produced 121,000 litres of olive oil and 10 tonnes of achar this year.

Nangarhar Canal Department Director Mawlavi Ghulam Rahman Kazeem told Pajhwok Afghan News this production of olive and achar contract granted to a private company Al Madina.

He said due to natural disasters and technical issues there was drastic decline in the product of olive oil gardens that belong to the Canal Department.

“There were several issues, drought, natural disasters, warm winds during the flower period of olive and some other issues,” he said.

He said last year olive production stook at 1,087 but this year only up to 100 tonnes of production was estimated.

He said last year 122,000 litres of oil and 10 tonnes of achar produced but this year there was a drastic decline in the production of the two items.

Kazeem said:“We carried out the process of contract awarding through a transparent manner and all olive and achar were sold at 71 million afs. One litre of olive oil was accounted for 562 afs while one bottle of achar accounted for 102 afs.”

One of the condition in the contract was that Nangarhar olive and achar would be exported to foreign countries to help improve the revenue, increase export and generate jobs for the people.

Suhail Langaryal, head of the Almadina Company, said Afghanistan's olive and Achar export to foreign countries would help increase Afghanistan's revenue and the export level.
