Ongoing conflict between Russia, Ukraine deeply grieves Pope

(MENAFN) Pope Francis is extremely saddened by the current war between Russia and Ukraine because he feels a strong "affection" for both of the adversarial nations. On Sunday, the Pontiff made the comments while flying home from a trip to Bahrain.

The Pope told reporters, " I have great affection for the Russian people and I also have great affection for the Ukrainian people," recalling early experiences that made him "in love" with the country.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which broke away from the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople in the late 16th century and united with the Holy See, is presumably what the Pontiff was alluding to when he said that "the Ukrainian liturgy" was. The Pope did not go into further detail regarding what "the Ukrainian liturgy" was.

Francis urged people not to place the blame for the continued fighting only on the Russian people, instead blaming "the mercenaries, on the soldiers who go off to war as an adventure" for the "cruelty" of the fighting.
