(MENAFN) On Monday, Russian and Ukrainian senior diplomats traded insults at the United Nations, with the Ukrainian ambassador branding Moscow's decision to drop out of the grain export arrangement "blackmail."
Russia's UN envoy accused Ukraine of exploiting the Black Sea maritime corridor to transport grain to global markets "for military and sabotage objectives" against its fleet, warning that it will not allow boats to pass through without its permission.
At a UN Security Council emergency meeting convened by Russia, Vasily Nebenzya accused Ukraine of carrying out "massive air and sea assaults" against Russia's Black Sea fleet and facilities in Sevastopol on October 29.
As stated by him, this was done with support from the West, especially the UK, “under the cover of the humanitarian grain corridor”, which was established under the 22 July grain deal.
As a result, “the Russian side cannot guarantee the safety of civilian vessels participating in the Black Sea Initiative,” he stated.
Ukraine, on the other hand, has refuted the allegations and argues that Russia's pullout from the Black Sea grain export agreement is strategic.
"We are outraged but not surprised over the announcement by Russia to suspend its participation in the Black Sea Green Initiative," according to Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN.
