(MENAFN) Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated on Friday that Poland has accepted the US offer to build the country's first nuclear power facility. Westinghouse Electric Co. will be granted the contract to construct the reactors, the first of which is expected to be completed by 2033.
“A strong Poland-US alliance guarantees the success of our joint initiatives,” Morawiecki posted on twitter on Friday, outlining that the decision to “use the reliable, safe technology” of Westinghouse was taken after discussions with Vice President Kamala Harris and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
Morawiecki also congratulated Mark Brzezinski, the US ambassador to Poland, for delivering Westinghouse's proposal last month.
In April, South Korea's state-owned Korea Hydro Nuclear Power filed a bid for the project, and Warsaw had also discussed it with French firms. According to Reuters, a senior US source told reporters that the decision was a "big matter" since it would "define... interconnected security for decades to come."
Choosing the US and Westinghouse was sending a message to Russia “about the strength and the meshing together of a US-Poland alliance,” the official asserted.
