Elite US force will battle in Ukraine if war ‘escalates’

(MENAFN) According to military leaders of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, should a crisis arise between Russia and NATO, the division would not think twice before entering Ukraine. War simulations are presently being held by the elite division in Romania, not far from the nation's border with the ravaged state.

The leaders of the battalion told CBS that they would be ready to enter Ukraine if the violence intensified, but they did not specify what that could entail, or if NATO came under assault. They emphasized that the purpose of their present deployment, the first since World War II, in Europe is "to defend NATO territory."

Brigadier General John Lubas, the deputy commander, informed the news organization, "we're ready to defend every inch of NATO soil.”

The 101st Airborne Division is conducting combined live-fire ground and air assault drills in Romania. The commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Colonel Edwin Matthaidess, claims that his division is the American force that is most near the conflict in Ukraine. He claimed that while "building objectives to practice against" and planning the exercises to "replicate exactly what's going on" in Ukraine, United States forces have been "closely watching" the Russian military.
