Seoul reports on North Korea's ballistic rocket test

(MENAFN) Prior to the visit of United States Vice President Kamala Harris to the area, North Korea is stated to have tested a short-range ballistic missile, according to Seoul.

According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missile was fired from near Taechon in northwest North Korea and traveled around 600 kilometers (373 miles) before touching down in the Sea of Japan.

The announcement precedes Harris' trip to South Korea and Japan as well as the next joint naval drill between the United States and South Korea. The vice president is going to visit Asia the following week. The launch was unlawful according to international law, according to South Korea's presidential National Security Council.

General Paul LaCamera, the head of the South Korea-United States United Forces Command, and General Kim Seung-kyum, the chairman of JCS, issued a joint statement pledging to "further solidify a combined defense posture against any North Korean threats and provocations." The North's weapon testing, they claimed, threaten world peace.
