Purple Island in Qatar has been named one of the Best Islands in the World by global travel site Big 7 Travel. Big 7 Travel has officially released its annual list of 'The 50 Best Islands In The World', a diverse list that spans from the secluded island of Mnemba in Tanzania to the Aegean island of Bozcaada in Turkey.

Purple Island is ranked No. 14 on the list, with Mauritius coming in at No. 1. The full list is available at Island boasts a fascinating history, the website says. 'Once a temporary campsite for trade with Bahrain and used by fishermen and pearl divers, it's home to some fascinating ruins, as well as a wide variety of birds and marine animals.'
The island is located in the Al Khor-Al Thakhira area north of Doha.
According to information available online, the island owes its name to an ancient purple dye producing site. Besides the mangroves, other key attractions of the island include small animals and migratory birds, with the latter visiting the place during the winter months.
