Iran says it is prepared to work with US on detainees’ issue
(MENAFN) The current prisoner arrangement between Iran and the United States will be implemented "immediately," the Iranian Foreign Ministry declared on Wednesday.
According to the ministry's website, Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman, made the statements in response to inquiries from media regarding the U.S. remarks on the subject of inmates.
"By implementing this agreement, we are ready to get the innocent Iranians imprisoned in the United States released, those who have become victims of injustice by the judicial system of the country on false charges of violating the cruel and illegal U.S. sanctions, and make their ... quick return to the open arms of their families possible," he asserted.
Nevertheless, "the American side, instead of acting and removing the obstacles in this field, is only performing propaganda shows against Iran," Kanaani highlighted.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked Iran to free detained Iranian-American citizens on Tuesday. Iran claims that these people were imprisoned on espionage-related allegations.
The exchange of prisoners with the United States had been discussed on the sidelines of nuclear negotiations in Vienna, according to a February statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
