Ortega Regime Expels Order Founded By Mother Teresa
The regime of President Daniel Ortega has ordered the departure of the Missionaries of Charity from Nicaragua, an order founded by Mother Teresa.
Both La Prensa de Nicaragua and Vatican News reported Friday on the departure of the nuns and the termination of their work with vulnerable communities, especially sick children and the elderly.
Vatican News described the closure of the order in Nicaragua as another act of repression by Ortega against the Nicaraguan Catholic Church.
There are more than 100 non-governmental organizations that have been closed by orders of Ortega in the last two days.
With those 100, AFP recalled, there are a total of 858 non-profit civil organizations made illegal after the popular revolt of April 2018 described as an attempted coup by the Ortega government.
For almost four decades the Missionaries of Charity settled in the Granada area, where they administered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Home, which took in abused or abandoned girls and adolescents.
It also had a nursery where they cared for the children of low-income working families and operated a soup kitchen for the elderly. In Managua, they ran a home for the elderly and other social assistance projects
