(MENAFN) Despite criticism from numerous other European countries and Ukraine, Germany's Chancellor argues that maintaining connections with Russian President Vladimir Putin is critical. The conversations are necessary to send the word to Moscow, according to Olaf Scholz, who spoke to the German news agency DPA on Friday.
Despite the current Russian military campaign in Ukraine, which the US and its allies in Europe and worldwide bitterly condemn, Scholz and French President Emmanuel macron intend to maintain communication with Putin, the chancellor added.
“It is absolutely necessary to talk to Putin," Scholz has clarified, noting that he “will continue to do so, as will the French President.” He has also stated that he would try to utilize such chances to make some “clear” statements to Russia. In specific, the chancellor informed he would try to tell Putin that Europe would not enforce a “dictated peace” on Ukraine by requesting that Kiev make concessions to end the war. Scholz has also called on Moscow to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory and obtain an agreement that would be acceptable to Kiev as well.
