Minister Of Labour Chairs 4Th Plenary Session Of ILC
Doha: Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri chaired yesterday the fourth plenary session of the International Labour conference (ILC) in its 110th session, in Geneva.
The plenary session, attended by representatives from 187 International Labour Organization (ILC) member states, discussed the reports of the Director-General and the Chairperson of the International Labour Organisation.
Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri stressed that the International Labour Conference in its 110th session is held under complicated conditions at the level of the labour sector in various countries of the world, which requires every considerable effort to figure out solutions through which representatives of the three labour parties can overcome the challenges imposed by the successive crises.
He highlighted the importance of the International Labour Conference as an effective platform for dialogue between the three working parties in a parliamentary atmosphere characterised by freedom of expression and mutual respect, pointing out that the presidency of the conference for the current session will work to find consensus among the participants to come up with effective recommendations to face challenges that have stricken the Labour sector globally.
Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri announced the ratification of amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention, which was approved by a majority of the Conference's General Assembly, noting that the approval of these reforms is deemed as an important historical event for ILO to further improve the work environment for workers in the maritime sector.
He explained that amendments are expected to enter into force in December 2024 after the implementation mechanisms are replenished and completed, stressing that the amendments will contribute to improving the living and working conditions of seafarers all over the world.
The heads of delegations of member states underlined the need to take advantage of the current session of the International Labour Conference to come up with effective solutions to labour issues in various countries of the world, praising the role of the State of Qatar in the global labour sector and the real contributions it makes, especially during the assumption of Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri as Vice-President of ILC of the current session.
The conference, which will continue until next Saturday, June 11, 2022, will discuss the report of the economies of the least developed countries and the Ukrainian crisis, and the reports of the Committee of Legal Experts on the conventions and recommendations of the International Labour Organisation.
The plenary sessions of the conference will also mull over issues of decent work, social and solidarity economy, and the strategic objective of employment as part of the follow-up mechanism to the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization. The International Labour Conference, aka“International Labour Parliament,” is held in Geneva annually to set the ILC general policies, including conventions and recommendations.
