Monkeypox is not been seen as a serious threat to Sri Lanka and so the public have been urged not to panic.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Faculty of Medicine said that specific antivirals for Monkeypox are available in Sri Lanka.
He also said that the approved vaccines for Monkeypox are available in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said that the population above 45 have at least partial protection as they have received small pox.
As per the current data, Monkeypox is not highly contagious as a airborne respiratory.
“Mass vaccination is not a recommendation. No need to panic,” he tweeted.
He said the general precautionary measures recommended against COVID-19 are also expected to largely protect the public from the transmission of Monkeypox. (Colombo Gazette)
