Doha: A delegation of experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) visited yesterday the Ministry of Municipality as part of its visit to Qatar to hold an exploratory study on internal supply chains and study the market for locally produced vegetables.

During the visit, which will continue until May 20, the delegation will hold a series of meetings with the stakeholders targeted for the study, including the ministries of Municipality, Commerce and Industry; harvesting, crop, vegetable and market companies, and a number of major commercial complexes in the country.

During the delegation's visit to the Ministry of Municipality, the Director of the Food Security Department Dr. Masoud Jarallah Al Marri, reviewed the efforts made by the ministry to achieve self-sufficiency within its National Food Security Strategy. This is done by promoting local agricultural production by encouraging the adoption of advanced crops in greenhouses, and working to support local farmers by launching a number of programmes to market the local agricultural product.

The Director of the Food Security Department stressed that the National Food Security Strategy succeeded in achieving its objectives during the previous phase. It was thanks to the concerted efforts of all ministries, institutions, agencies, companies, the private sector and all those concerned with food security in the country, through the follow-up committee for the implementation of food security policies in the public and private sectors.

The delegation's studies during this visit include the Qatar's preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022; especially with regard to the issue of combating food waste and environmental sustainability efforts, as well as its efforts through the Qatar Fund for Development to provide assistance to a number of countries in the field of achieving food security. The efforts also include establishing an office for FAO in Qatar to benefit from Qatari experiences in supporting the efforts of the global organisation.
