Egypt: Ancient Pharaonic tombs found at Saqqara archaeological site

During the excavation at the Saqqara archaeological site, 5 ancient Pharaonic tombs were discovered. The tombs are in the South of Cairo. It's certainly the most recent in a long line of significant finds in the area. Archaeologists have discovered five ancient tombs adorned with well-preserved paintings at a cemetery in Saqqara, just outside the Egyptian capital Cairo, officials said on Saturday.

The tombs belong to senior officials from the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate period, dating to more than four thousand years ago, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said.“The Egyptian archaeological mission uncovered five tombs about 100 meters northwest of the Merenre Pyramid in southern Saqqara,” Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry as saying in a statement on Saturday.

The tombs contain artifacts from the end of the Old Kingdom

The tombs contain artifacts and findings from the end of the Old Kingdom. Furthermore, it may have lasted from 2686 BC to 2181 BC. Moreover, there are some from the start of the First Intermediate Period, which lasted from 2181 BC to 2055 BC. These five tombs are located northeast of the pyramid of King Merenre I. He ruled Egypt around 2270 BC.

One tomb amongst the five belonged to a prominent statesman named Iri. It features a shaft leading to a burial chamber. A massive limestone coffin and carved items belonging to the tomb's owner can be found inside. The second tomb features a rectangular shaft and is said to be of the wife of a man named Yart. The third belonged to Bi Nafarhafayi, who served as the superintendent of the Great House, the chanting priest, and the house cleaner.

Egypt just disclosed ancient treasures discovered in Saqqara in January 2021 . It had more than 50 wooden sarcophagi dating from the New Kingdom, which spanned the 16th to 11th century BC.
