HMC provides novel treatment for allergic disorders

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has introduced new advanced treatment for several allergic disorders as it aspires to provide first-class service to the population of Qatar in line with international standards.

'Biologics', different from traditional systemic drugs, are being used for patients with allergic disorders such as asthma and urticaria.

“At present we are in the era of precision medicine or targeted treatment. Biologic medications have been major breakthroughs for the treatment of various allergic disorders like asthma, urticaria, atopic dermatitis and chronic rhinitis with nasal polyposis.

“These medications can help keep the disease under control and improve the quality of life of the patients,” said Dr. Ramzy Mohammed Ali, Associate Consultant, Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology at HMC.

“These treatments are available at the Adult Allergy and Immunology Division at HMC. There is a lot of research going on globally for the development of new treatments; these may be introduced once they are approved and available,” he said.

Adult Allergy and Immunology Division operates 24 clinics per week, including General Allergy clinics and more specialized clinics like a Severe Asthma clinic, a Severe Urticaria clinic, a Chronic Rhinitis with nasal polyps clinic in collaboration with the ENT department, a clinical pharmacy clinic helping patients deal with their medications, and two immunodeficiency clinics.

“The department includes a highly qualified allergy laboratory to perform the necessary tests to diagnose allergies and for other treatment procedures. We provide modern treatments that are in line with international standards and recommendations in the treatment of allergy and immunology conditions. We also provide intravenous and subcutaneous immunoglobulin administration services for primary immunodeficiency patients,” said Dr. Mohammed Ali.

“We receive 2500 new referrals per year on average. A wide range of disorders are seen, including but not limited to, allergic rhinitis, asthma, severe asthma, food allergy, drug allergy, different types of urticaria, atopic dermatitis, hereditary angioedema, anaphylaxis, primary immunodeficiency disorders etc. Among these conditions; asthma, allergic rhinitis and urticaria are more common in line with the global prevalence,” he said.

The Adult Allergy and Immunology at HMC established in 2010, and is the only service in the country that caters to adults with allergic and immunodeficiency diseases. The Allergy and Immunology section was able to achieve four international accreditations: the first being ACGME-I accreditation for the combined Allergy and Immunology fellowship training program, the second being the recognition as a Word Allergy Organization Centre of excellence.

Additionally, HMC's Allergy and Immunology Service has also been accredited as an Urticaria Center of Reference and Excellence (UCARE) and Angioedema Center of Reference and Excellence (ACARE) by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GALEN).

“At the Allergy and Immunology section in HMC we seek to maintain professional and scientific expertise and strive to introduce the latest tests and medications as they become available. We aspire to provide first class service to the population of Qatar in line with international standards,” said Dr. Mohammed Ali, who is also associate program director of the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program.
